Before dawn, I climbed toward the summit of Gokyo Ri beneath a sky still holding the last shades of night. The air was thin, the trail silent, and the Himalayan peaks stood almost invisible in the cold.
Then the sun reached Everest. For a fleeting moment, first light swept across the summit, turning the snow and wind gold while the valleys remained in shadow.
After the long climb and bitter morning cold, the mountain seemed to awaken before the rest of the world.
